Hostels

For the freshers(first yearites), boys stay in 'Gajjar Bhavan', hostel number 4.

Followed by either 'Nehru Bhavan' or 'Tagore Bhavan' during the second year. For the elite few (top 50 or so).. they get to stay at 'Bhabha Bhavan'.

For third and final yearites.. Its either the 'Swami Vivekanand Bhavan' or the 'Bhabha Bhavan'.

First off.. The rooms.. The rooms sizes are good enough for either a single or double seating, except in 'Tagore Bhavan' where they are exceptionally small.

For first yearites, it is compulsory to have a double seater room.. But from second onwards, double seating or single seating is completely your option.

Cleanliness is held in high regard in all hostels, the wardens along with the hostel boys and cleaning staff try their best to keep all surrounding clean. Room cleaning takes place thrice a week. (Sweeping and Mopping).

In Gajjar Bhavan (H-4), you will have two beds, two study tables and one cupboard for the two occupants.
Rest of the hostels, will have one/two beds, one study table and wall cupboards.
A study light and fan are equipped is all rooms.
Rooms in 'Bhabha Bhavan' and 'Swami Vivekanand' have balconies.
Laundry is available to all hostels for Rs. 10 per pair (washing and ironing).
(note - you'll have to do dedicates yourself.. so learn to wash your stuff before coming).
You will be handed a code of conduct book at the time of admission for rest of the information regarding your stay at the hostel, do read this thoroughly.
The washrooms are of course a nightmare during the mornings.. There are western type of toilets available at all hostels except 'Tagore Bhavan'.

p.s - By now you must be thinking that 'Tagore Bhavan' with its small rooms and indian toilets must be the worst hostel.. You are mistaken.. Its your friends who make up your hostel life and you will frankly experience stuff here that you'll never have encountered before and will definitely never experience later..

NOTE - You are not allowed to keep any sort of motorized vehicle with you near the hostel, all vehicles must strictly be parked in the parking space provided near the front gate ONLY!

Breakfast, lunch and dinner is provided at all hostels and the menu is decided by the elected HMC (Hostel Member Comitee).
(p.s the food is pretty much always terrible.. the food here will definitely make you yearn for your mom's cooking)
A canteen is also available which is overcrowded only during the lunch time and serves pretty decent food.
Night canteen is also available at most of the hostels and 'Bhabha Bhavan' has evening canteen as well.
Luckily, SVNIT is an urban campus, since the city expanded and all kinds of food are easily available within a 10 minutes auto ride!! :D (take note foodies.. this is the college for you if you're okay with paying for eating outside)

Campus Tour

Here are some random clicks from around the campus!

The first one is outside of the campus, there is a round-about as soon as we get out of the campus main gate, there is security present at the gate at all time and gate closes at 11:30p.m after which you will need a gate pass to go out of the campus.

This is the main gate..

This image shows what will be your first glimpse into the campus.

Here's a dilapidated image of campus map.. (You'll get a better map during your admission)

This building here will be on your left as soon as you enter the main gate, it is called the 'Students Amenity Centre' and houses State Bank of India, Canara bank (ATM only!) and a post office.
There is a parking stand for student vehicles along the road, further up the road is girl's hostel 'Mother Teresa Bhavan'.

If you go straight from the roundabout you will find this lawn to your right

As you go along, the 'first right' will take you to the administrative building, taking the second right will take you to the library and various other departments.
Here is the picture of the administrative building that you will find on your right.

On taking the 2nd right, you will find this path.

A few yards ahead, you will find the 'Central Library' on your left.

Going further ahead will take you to the fee counter, which is a part of the 'administrative building'.

Upcoming - I will be posting pictures of hostel next, stay tuned! :)

Way to get to SVNIT from Railway Station

So, first things first, let me introduce myself,
I am Srikar K.C & I'm pursuing bachelors in mechanical engineering at NIT Surat. I created this blog to help out future students to get to know more about the campus and it's surroundings.

La première question,How to get to SVNIT?
Way to SVNIT on Google Maps
Once you get to the railway station/airport, take the taxi or auto rickshaw depending upon your luggage/convenience and then ask the driver to take you to SVNIT, he might ask you whether it is the same as SVREC (REC - Regional Engineering College.. its an old name), it is one and the same. If that name doesn't seem to ring a bell for him, tell him to take you to ICHCHHANATH and ask around, you will easily find directions to the college. On the first day of admission, you will find placards with directions on them within the campus to the location which you will have to go to.

Now, where to stay?
Hostel, obviously! But for parents, there are guest houses available, first try the guest house on the opposite side of the road to SVNIT, if rooms there are unavailable, the guest house staff will guide you to another hostel with vacancies, these rooms are good enough for a week's stay and some of them even have A.C. If you want to stay at a hotel, the closest ones to the campus are 'Ginger Hotel' and 'The Grand Bhagwati'. Ginger hotel happens to be more economical than The Grand Bhagwati.

What you will need in the hostel?
I would recommend having a laptop to keep in touch with parents, book tickets, and keep yourself updated with a lot of campus happening, besides that, other toiletries can be bought here. Stationary would be provided by the institute, you will need about Rs.2000 for it.

I also recommend getting a bicycle as you would be commuting between classrooms & hostels everyday. If you do happen to have a paunch, you'll watch it disappear thanks to the mess food and the long walks ;).
